She's no stranger to the Music Circus tent, but Sarah Tattersall has
found a role well suited to her acting talents in this week's Music Circus production of
Kiss Me, Kate, which plays through Sunday, July 28 in
Sacramento.Teaming with Michael G. Hawkins, Tattersall plays the dual role of Lilli Vanessi and Katharine opposite Hawkins' Fred Graham and Petruchio.
The chemistry between the duo clicks into high gear immediately making this play-within-a-play a huge success in its first return performance under the tent in 16 years - the musical last appeared at the Music Circus in 1980.
Kiss Me, Kate is based on the William Shakespeare classic The Taming of the Shrew, and is the tale of Fred Graham (Hawkins) and Lilli Vanessi (Tattersall) who were once married and now court an uneasy relationship as the lead actors in a touring company's production of The Taming of the Shrew.
The lives of the pair closely mirrors the characters they are playing, with both still feeling an attraction toward each other on the inside, but putting on a combative and fiery relationship on the outside.
In addition to being the lead actor, Graham also is the director which throws ex-wife Lilli into fits as she must take orders from him. After finding out the flowers she thought Fred had sent her were really intended for another woman, Lilli threatens to quit in the middle of a performance, but complicating matters are two gangsters trying to collect a gambling debt in what turns into a hilarious outing as Graham convinces them that they must keep Lilli in the show or they can never collect their money.
Darryl Ferrer and Michael Mulheren put on a crowd-pleasing performance in the roles of the mobsters who are suddenly thrown into the middle of the performance to better keep an eye of Lilli.
Lilli's contempt for Fred spills over into their performance as the duo takes sudden departures from the script while trying to keep in character as Petruchio and Katharine.
Tattersall, with her terrific and melodic voice, turns in an outstanding performance as Lilli/Katharine and was a perfect Shrew with her expressions and mannerisms on the stage. Coupled with Hawkins, the pair put on a delightful performance that had the crowd standing at the show's end.
Hopefully it won't take another 16 years for "Kiss Me, Kate" to return to Sacramento again. This musical is destined to be one of the Music Circus' all-time favorites. Reviewed by Joe Blenkle
